Travel documents

  • Passport for every traveller, valid for your whole trip
  • Booking confirmation and tour operator contact number
  • Travel insurance policy and emergency number
  • Completed online entry forms for your destination
  • A consent letter if a child is travelling without both parents

Clothes

  • Two or three swimsuits, so one is always dry
  • Light shorts, T-shirts and a cover-up
  • One smarter outfit for dinner, with long pants and closed shoes for men
  • Sandals, flip-flops and comfortable walking shoes
  • A light sweater for air-conditioned restaurants and the flight home

Beach and sun

  • Reef-safe sunscreen, which some Mexican parks require
  • Sunglasses and a hat
  • An insulated cup to keep drinks cold
  • A waterproof phone pouch

Health and money

  • Prescription medicine in original containers, in your carry-on
  • Pain relievers, stomach remedies and after-sun lotion
  • Insect repellent
  • US cash in small bills for tips
  • A credit card with no foreign transaction fees

What not to pack

Leave the beach towels (resorts provide them), expensive jewellery and a full-size hair dryer at home. Check your airline's baggage allowance before you pack, because many fares from Canada include only a carry-on.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to dress up at an all-inclusive resort?

Not usually, but many a la carte restaurants have an evening dress code. Men are often asked to wear long pants and closed shoes, so pack one smarter outfit.

Should I bring cash to an all-inclusive?

Bring a small amount of US cash in small bills for tips and a credit card with no foreign transaction fees for everything else.

Can I bring sunscreen in my carry-on?

Yes, as long as each container holds 100 ml or less and fits in your clear liquids bag. Larger bottles must go in checked luggage.
